for those not in the know, i work in the construction industry. as i've written about before, we have our slow seasons (fall, winter) and our busy seasons (spring, summer); boss lady and i are used to this and any person that comes to work here is introduced to one or the other immediately. even with the way the economy has been going lately (christ, i'm tired of hearing about it!), we (the employees) haven't really felt a difference. it's our slow season, so, duh, we're slow.
with that being said, i just got hit in the face with a hard dose of reality. one of my favorite members, a guy who has worked for his company in a semi-high up position for the past 25 years, has been laid off.
i don't like saying this, but i have job security. no matter how rough the economy gets, no matter how desperate our guys get for work, i am pretty much safe when it comes to my job being in jeopardy - our part-time position will be the first to go, but past that? this business can't run with just the manager as the only employee. so with all this talk of the shitty economy and how it's only going to get worse before it has any chance to get better, i've kind of ignored it. but now, with shaun being laid off? i'm not worried for me, but god, how i'm worried about my guys. if a guy who's been with his company for 25 years (one year less than i've been alive!) gets the boot, what chance do the newer, younger guys have? what's to stop other companies from going after guys who've been with them for ten to fifteen years?
that's all. i just had to rant/worry out loud a little. i'm really going to miss his little neon green honda civic pulling up out front every other day or so...
